Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz, founded in 1972, is an old winery and was at the basis of the founding of the D.O. Ribera del Duero itself. Climate, soil and vineyard create exceptional conditions and guarantee that Viñedos y Bodegas can produce Gormaz wines with a raw material of the highest quality and a remarkable character. This applies both to their finer, more selective wines and to the more common labels in terms of price-quality ratio. The climate at this location is Mediterranean but with a clearly more continental character than other zones in the Ribera del Duero wine region. This is due to the height of the vineyards. A total of 520 hectares of vineyard is used, situated at an altitude of 845 to 960 meters above sea level and spread over more than twenty villages and municipalities. The vineyard is spread over more than 1,000 small farms with a large diversity of soils – both in composition and in diversity – with one common characteristic: the calcareous rock that ensures the necessary mineral character of the grapes and that prevents the roots from being too deep grow in the ground. Oenologist, Mª José García Moreno, is convinced that the quality of the grapes are at the basis of a good wine. She has therefore devoted many years to interpreting the vineyards and differentiating them because of their enormous complexity, which is rather unique in Spain. The differences in terms of age, quality and richness of the soil, but also the wide variety of soils, the orientation of the plots and the microclimates together ensure that we have an extremely fine vineyard here for making excellent red wines.
